Poemenia americana is in the family Ichneumonidae. Ichneumonidae are parasitic wasps that use their long ovipositors to deposit eggs into an insect host. Poemenia americana was one of the more common Ichneumonid wasps in the Bee Atlas project, and was widely distributed throughout the state.
