Description: 3/8 - 5/8 inch long. Stout, hairy insects, typically black and yellow or orange.

Where/When: Commonly found visiting flowers. Typically nest in old burrows in the ground and other cavities. Active from spring until fall.

Significance: They are a pest because of their ability to sting. They are usually not aggressive when visiting flowers. They are more likely to sting when their nest is threatened.
