Crown gall
Agrobacterium tumefaciens

  • Leaves wilt and die, plants grow poorly
  • Round to irregular woody overgrowth or tumor at soil line or on roots
  • Young galls are soft, light green or white
  • Old galls are hard, dark colored or black
  • Occasionally galls are seen higher on the stem

Winter injury

  • Tip dieback is common
  • Depending on severity of winter, stems dieback to crown or at least to snowline
  • May produce leaves and even flower buds, but dieback in June
