Exotic Honeysuckles

Lonicera species: Tatarian Honeysuckle L. tatarica (L.), Morrow's Honeysuckle L. morrowii (Gray), Bell's Honeysuckle L. x bella (Zabel)

Found in:

  • Old landscapes, fields, marshes, woodlands and woodland edges
  • Full sun and part shade

Characteristics:

  • Woody shrub that is dense, multi-stemmed and upright
  • Grows to a height of 10’
  • Stem pith is brown with a hollow center
  • Older stems have shaggy bark
  • Leaves are bluish-green, have smooth edges (no teeth) and are hairless
  • Tubular flowers are white, pink or red
  • Berries (fruits) are red or orange and numerous

Significance

  • Minnesota Invasive Weed
  • Seeds spread readily by birds
  • Not to be confused with native Bush Honeysuckle (Diervilla lonicera)
