False bombardier beetles

Description: 3/4 - 1 inch long.
Slender with a dark head and wing covers and an orangish section behind the head (prothorax).

Where/When: Generally found on the ground under leaves and other cover in a variety of environments during spring and summer.

Significance: They are important predators of insects, especially caterpillars.
