Description: 1/2 inch long. Black(other carpenter ant species can be black and red); one-segmented petiole.

Where/When: Winged carpenter ants can be found indoors from April to June as well as late winter.

Significance: Carpenter ants are associated with wood anywhere inside a home or outdoors in trees, sheds, fences, landscape timbers or other sources of wood. The presence of winged carpenter ants indicates the presence of an indoor nest. They nest in wood or voids and can potentially cause significant damage to homes.
