Description: 1/16 - 1/8 inches long. Tannish bodies and dark colored abdomens with red eyes (which can fade after the flies die)

Where/When: Fruit flies are found indoors in kitchens and other areas where fermenting fruits and vegetables, fermenting liquids (such as beer or wine), soft drink containers, or trash containers can be found. They can occur at any time during the year, although fruit flies are particularly common in homes during fall and winter.

Significance: Fruit flies are primarily a nuisance because they can occur in large numbers. They are generally not considered a health problem.
