High temperature

  • Lettuce may taste bitter if grown under high temperatures
  • Plant produces a flower stalk under multiple days of high temperatures (> 75° F)

Aster Yellows
Aster Yellows Phytoplasma

  • Lettuce has a bitter taste
  • Plants infected when very young are overall yellow, stunted and may have deformed leaves
  • Plants infected when older; only center leaves are pale yellow and stunted
  • Drops of tan milky sap may be present at the midrib of the lower leaves
  • Symptoms are most severe in July and August
