Uneven moisture

  • Causes radish root to split or crack

Wireworms
Agriotus spp., Melanotus spp.

  • Tunneling and holes in roots
  • Leaves show no damage
  • More common in gardens that were previously in grass or sod
  • Larvae are thin, shiny, jointed, yellow to reddish-brown color, and approximately ¼ - 1 ½ inch long
  • Larvae can be found throughout the growing season

Downy mildew
Peronospora parasitica

  • Skin on the root may be rough, corky and cracked
  • Dark brown to black sunken area on the upper half of the radish root, center of root remains white
  • Angular yellow spots on leaves that eventually grow into tan papery areas with a yellow border
  • Fuzzy white to gray fungal growth can be seen on the underside of the leaves
  • Common in cool wet weather
