Rough Bluegrass

Found in:

  • Lawns

Characteristics:

  • Perennial grass that spreads through stolons (above ground creeping stems)
  • Lighter in color than Kentucky Bluegrass
  • Leaves are yellow-green turning to reddish-brown during drought
  • Leaf blades are flat, smooth and somewhat shiny/glossy in appearance with a boat-shaped tip
  • Leaf edges (margins) are rough
  • Flower heads are an open, pyramidal shape that blooms in June

Significance

  • Creeping stems (stolons) spread into surrounding grass plants and can ultimately overtake those grasses under favorable conditions
  • Improve drainage and grow lawn a little drier
  • Very intolerant of dry conditions
